A Shared Rhythm: May and Kelvin's Story
For most of their married life, May and Kelvin moved to different rhythms. Kelvin, now 66, spent his career in the semiconductor industry, criss-crossing Southeast Asia week after week. May, 62, kept the home running and had worked in admin at a training centre.
Then retirement arrived, as it does, and the pace of life began to shift for both of them.
May noticed it first, as she approached 60. The days began to feel a little quieter, a little emptier. She wasn't quite sure what she was looking for, but she knew she wanted to stay active and connected to her neighbourhood. The answer came almost by accident. Walking past House of Joy one day, she wandered in and tried Chair Yoga, where she met Julie, the instructor. One class led to another. Zumba Gold at Blk 30A came next, then a chat with a staff member who nudged her gently towards Chinese Dance. Before long, her week was full of music, movement, and new friends.
Kelvin's transition was harder. After retiring at 63, Kelvin found himself parked in front of the television. The silence of home was a strange thing to come back to after a career built on motion. Last year, he decided to join House of Joy too, taking part in Pickleball, Flapping, and Gym Tonic. His calendar, once again, became pleasantly busy. His body feels stronger now, and he calls HOJ "a good place for the mind."
What neither of them quite expected was what it would do for their marriage. Now that they are both active, they have things to talk about over dinner. Stories from class. New people they've met. May says her relationship at home has improved because they share common ground again. Kelvin agrees.
Looking ahead, Kelvin is hoping the centre will run AI talks for seniors, especially on spotting scams. May, for her part, just wants to keep dancing.
